“Shining, Shimmering, Splendid” (#69)

the-little-mermaid-ursula.jpgThis write-up will be especially brief, since I have a much longer Disney post inspired by my rewatching of these films for the podcast.

There were no great surprises in the first half of the Disney Renaissance — 1989’s The Little Mermaid, 1991’s Beauty And The Beast, 1992’s Aladdin, and 1994’s The Lion King — the films range from pretty great to truly great, with The Little Mermaid being truly sublime and an easy favorite for me. For children, for adults, these four films are still masterful, timeless entertainment. And what’s more, they’re genuine and full of creative, original ideas — a feature Disney has gone awfully wayward on lately.

Disney may be trying to regurgitate our childhood back to us now with “live action” carbon copies of our animated faves, but children of our generation got by far the better deal experiencing these classics the first time around.
